ROCK OF THE NORTH
DECLARES WAR ON CANCER
Recovering bladder cancer patient, Steve Lally, has called in all his guitar wielding troops to organise a years worth of rock gigs, through his online music networking website, Rock of The North (RoTN). The campaign is entitled ‘RoTN to the Core’ and will feature a wide variety of rock bands playing for free at pubs and clubs throughout Yorkshire. All venues have kindly donated their stages and Steve, with his family has invested £30,000 in PA, lighting and sound equipment, ensuring that the maximum contribution goes to his chosen Charity of the Year, Cancer Research UK.
Steve is no stranger to fundraising, having previously supported Breakthrough Breast Cancer, Marie Curie, local Yorkshire Hospices and Everyman. Following his recent treatment, Steve has pledged to support Cancer Research UK, as he feels they have directly helped him.
“Due to past research, the medical professionals have been able to save my bladder and clear the cancer, which was not previously possible.”, Stephen informed, “I am looking forward to returning to a normal full life and hope to hear the news soon that I am totally in remission.”
The gigs come in all shapes and sizes and the first two, held at the Lion (Castleford) and The Admiral Duncan (Wakefield), have already raised £2500. Future dates are at the Thornhill Arms in Stanningley, Leeds, a full weekend of quality Rock bands from Friday 5th June finishing Sunday 7th June. Following that weekend there will be another Rocking night at New Lodge WMC, Wakefield Road, Barnsley on Thursday 16th July. Full details are available of the gigs at www.rotntothecore.co.uk/events
Steve continued, “The gigs are really important to us, but it’s growing in all different directions. Friends from the website are getting in touch and giving their fundraising ideas, one of which is Trackmania. This is a virtual car racing game, where people race each other on line and our friends are running a massive online sponsored event. They are doing a virtual Le Mans 24 Hour race on Saturday 29th August and will try to beat a Guinness World Record. All proceeds will be passed to the ‘RoTN to the Core’ Campaign.
Simon Moran, from Cancer Research UK, said, “I’ve been supporting Steve with his fundraising plans and have been impressed with his drive and determination to make his campaign work to it’s fullest. We wish him the very best with RoTN to the Core and the successful completion of his treatment”.
