The Black Hand Gang EP release!
Scottish rockers, The Black Hand Gang release debut EP to rave reviews!
The Black Hand Gang, have just released their self titled debut EP to rave reviews in the national press. The 4 track release has a unique feel to it, the bands sound, is raw, emotive and at times uplifitng, and in vocalist Redmond, they have a talent like no other in Scotland right now.
The first song, 'Bloody Hands' is a real foot stomper, combining a folkish/celtic rhythm with a powerful, bass driven groove, with a rallying vocal call.
Track 2, sees the band move into an americana-esque field, with the EP's stand out track - 'Bricks and mortar'. Starting off with a subtle folk/acoustic guitar riff and hushed vocal, the song bursts into life, 3 part harmonies, accompanied by some beautiful pedal steel guitar and Hammond organ. Again, the lyrics stand out, here telling of the hardships felt by those in the under class.
The penultimate number, 'Scumbags' up's the tempo considerably, with a tight punchy rhythm section, helping to push the venomous lead vocal even further. The subject matter this time, ironically, it seems, are those being defended in 'Bricks...' but again the lyrics are as honest and hard hitting as they are wonderfully delivered.
The fourth and final track, is 'Swords', a heart wreching ballad on the knife crime problem facing the country. Such a sombre subject matter is somehow transformed into a unifying, uplifting cry to stand and fight the problem as one, the vocals delivered from the heart, helped again by the pedal steel accompinament, and some tender harmonica.
The band play Twa tams on 14th August, and the EP is available now from FOPP, One up, Avalanche, as well as being available from all the usual online stores.
