Dobet Gnahore LIVE
2010 Grammy award winner sets her sights on Gateshead!
On Wednesday 28 July, 2010 Grammy winner Dobet Gbnhaore will be performing at Gateshead Old Town Hall, as part of her exclusive and first UK tour this summer presented by CMAT.
"I have been to England before but have never toured here. I am very excited about performing in different cities and looking forward to being (in Gateshead) in July."
Dobet Gnahore draws heavily on the traditional music of the Ivory Coast, but also explores many other African genres to create a diverse, Pan-African pop-influenced sound all her own. She defines her approach as 'defiantly diverse, musically and linguistically'.
She sings in more than eight different languages, and her lyrics speak to the issues of women in Africa, as well as multiple social issues. Dobet Gnahore is also an accomplished dancer, with traditional and contemporary African dance featuring heavily in her live shows.
Dobet is a vivacious bundle of energy, blessed with a powerful voice and infectious charisma. Whether she is at The Barbican (as guest artiste as part of the recent Miriam Makeba celebration) or touring internationally, she delivers ‘on all musical cylinders’!
Dobet Gnahore was born in 1982 in a small village in the Ivory Coast, West Africa. She dropped out of school at age 12, determined to become a musician, and by her mid-teens, she had become a touring musician and dancer. Gnahore trained with the Pan African Ki-Yi Mbock company, based in an 'artiste village' near Abidjan and developed her skills as an accomplished performer, with song, dance, percussion and theatre all blended into her performance. By her early 20s, she hit the international music scene.
This year, Gnahore reached worldwide critical acclaim with India Arie for their hit ‘Pearls’.
"I was surprised when my manager told me that India. Arie wanted to do a song with me … so I sent her a song which she arranged for us to do together."
It was a winning combination, as both artists scooped a prestigious Grammy Award winning the Best Urban/Alternative Performance in January 2010.
Her brand new album ‘Djekpa La You’ is out now and available to listen to at Explore Music at The Sage Gateshead and Gateshead’s Central Library.
Gnahore will be live at the newly refurbished Gateshead Old Town Hall on Wednesday 28 July, fresh from appearing at this year’ s WOMAD festival at Charlton Park - this show is one not to be missed this summer!
